Project Description:
This project's goal was to relieve the congestion and traffic problems on a stretch of US 460 at Millard in Pike County, Kentucky. The project primarily consisted of a 1,033-foot bridge spanning existing US 460/KY 80, the Levisa Fork, and the C&O Railroad. The new bridge helped to ease traffic problems by elevating US 460/KY80 out of congestion caused by the entrance to an elementary school. The roadway approaches required over 1.1 million cubic yards or rock and earth just above the existing community of Millard. HMB also provided for the maintenance of traffic, a large portion of which was coal trucks, throughout the course of construction. Plans were prepared in order to complete construction in two phases. Phase I of the contract was placed on a fast-track schedule in order to have the major bridge piers ready for the superstructure construction in Phase II. This shortened the time between the design contract NTP to completed structure by approximately two years.
