Project Description:
On this project, HMB was contracted to improve the interchange at I-75 & KY 876 just outside Richmond, Kentucky. Existing KY 876 was two-lanes approaching the bridge over I-75 from the west. After the bridge, it widened to four lanes as it proceeded into Richmond. HMB's design provided for widening the KY 876 to the west of the bridge to four lanes. On the bridge, KY 876 was widened to six lanes (including a left-turn lane in each direction) with a flush median. In addition, HMB ensured the grade on KY 876 at the new bridge would allow sufficient clearance for future resurfacing of I-75. The bridge is a Type IV PCI-beam with a deck width of 29.3 meters. The ramp from southbound I-75 to eastbound KY 876 required two left-turn lanes, and the ramp from westbound KY 876 to northbound I-75 required a dedicated right-turn lane. Other than some minor adjustments in order to meet the latest criteria for interstate entrance and exit ramps, the remaining ramps were resurfaced in their original locations. Plans provided for maintaining all traffic on KY 876 and I-75 throughout construction.
