AIRBORNE AIRPARK

Project Description:
HMB provided design and construction inspection for both phases of this two-part project. The first phase was development of a new 13.2-acre apron. This apron consisted of 16 inches of concrete with a four-inch stone base. Once the apron was completed, Airborne Express moved its operations to this new facility, allowing work to proceed on the project's second phase, rehabilitation of the client's existing 16.5 acre apron. HMB designed a 8-inch concrete bonded overlay for the existing apron. Although this bonding process is commonly used today, HMB's use of this process in the early 1990s was innovative. By selecting the bonded-overlay surface, HMB saved the client more than $1 million in construction costs while ensuring the apron supplied strength sufficient to accommodate 17.5-ton DC-8 aircraft. Both of the project's phases involved relocation of all utilities and extensive rerouting of existing traffic. The combined project totaled approximately $4.3 million.
